Apple today kicked off MacWorld by announcing the highly anticipated smartphone. The iPhone is a slim, 11.3 mm thick, bar shaped device that only has a touchscreen and speaker on the front. On the back is simply a 2 megapixel camera. The phone is controlled through the screen, which features a multi-touch interface that allows you to press and slide controls with multiple fingers at once. The device features quad-band GSM/EDGE, a 2 Megapixel camera, 8 GB memory, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There is an accelerometer built in that automatically senses orientation and switches the screen to match. The iPhone runs a slimmed down version of OS X with applications for music and full screen video playback, a web browser and phone related applications including calling and messaging.

Lets be honest...

After reading countless posts I had just this to say. SO many nay sayers but the bottom line is this, Apple makes great products, this phone is going to be hottest seller of the year, the price is what the Razor launched with. Let's be realistic, this is the phone to have. Will it have initial bugs, YEs is this a piece of junk NO. Will it be UMTS no.. is this a concern.. not really , did you know you can still watch full quality videos over EDGE.. Theres alot of people it seems wishing this phone bad luck, and hoping it fails. I think that this phone is so revolutionary. Cell phones are often complex .. this will be simple, Will it be Unlockable, no, will it be able to be used on other carriers, ofcourse not. Is it an exclusive yes. Will the...
Amen Brother!!!

Even if you don't plan on purchasing an iPhone, it's nice to know that the iPhone is probably going to act like a shot in the arm for the mobile manufacturing industry. I'm quite certain that competitors are going to want to "respond" to the iPhone w...
great post and i agree with you all the way, i know 3G is an upset but Job's is telling nytimes that it will be a simple firmware upgrade when the coverage becomes practical, so thats good news...other than that EDGE is NOT slow...i have slingbox and ...
Thank you. That is what I have been trying to tell poeple! and I wouldn't doubt if the 2nd or 3rd generations of the iPhone will be 3G. also the price will go down. the RAZR launched at about $500 and now it sits at $30 w/ contract. so I doubt the...

Cingular..Second choice?

Per USAToday..VZW had the first shot at the iPhone..

Fine by me as I never would have switched to the big checkmark.. but interesting none the less... And I sincerely hope Apple is indeed the heavily involved with support for the device.. left to Cingy and it would be an unmitigated disaster...

ATT giving 1 1/2 years for new uphone purchasers Free!

Jim Cramer, host of CNBC's "Mad Money, and director of "TheStreet.com," says AT&T is planning to steal away Verizon Wireless subscribers by an enticing offer to go along with the iPhone: Free AT&T Wireless subscription for a year and a half with the purchase of Apple's iPhone.

In essence, this would substantially lower the perceived price of the iPhone, providing a great incentive for early adopters.

I'm in!

cingy won: can vzw, sprint, or t-mo ever catch up?

man at the end of the day the man in orange always wins. Why can't i be for SPRINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cingular+apple=perfect team
Actually, in terms of profitability which is a very good indicator of future growth, Verizon is winning.

But why did you have to start yet another baseless troll. Who cares.

Not to mention competition is good, very good. It keeps our technolog...
you do realize that your days in orange will soon be at an end as you convert back over to dull blue.
All of you people seem to forget something for alot of us this phone will not even be an option. Make no mistake MetroPCS is the future of wireless not Apple. Metro is the fastest growing company in over fifty years and they show no sighnes of stoppin...
Hmmm, when WILL T-Mob get an exclusive phone that does more then any phone? Geez, they will never catch up, I guess I should throw away mt SideKick, SKII, and SK3 (oh, wait...)

Jan 9, 2007, 5:38 PM

Can you say "refund"?

I sure can.

As I'm sure many others will when their touchscreen ceases to operate.
πŸ™‚ yep
Why would you think it won't work? Think about it. Why the hell would they make a phone that uses a touch screen for every function and then just have it not work? That doesn't even make sense to assume. Look at the many PDAs, smart phones with to...
You simply don't know how hardy this phone is going to be, and neither do the rest of us.

There are plenty of phones out there that have touchscreens, and I haven't heard any horror stories about any of these phones suddenly being afflicted with no...

ive got an idea

for all you stupid people that are going to buy this silly device, do me a favor give me your 600$ an ill punch you in the face an we can call it even. Dont get me wrong Ipods are awesome, an so are cellphones, but explain to me after the past 2 years of ipods being the #1 sellin devices on the planet why the hell would you people buy another one just to incorperate a phone? O i C so when your standing around the water cooler with your buddies you can say that you spent a car payment on a phone job well done. better be careful with it cause cingular or at&t or who ever the hell they callin them selves this week wont cover it.
ah shuddup
No, how about I kick you in the nads right after I inform you of the obvious?

That there are people in this world who are willing to pay a premium to have these two devices melded into one for the sheer convenience of it? And yes, other phones c...

Oh boy....Apple, you done messed up now...

So....Im sure you have all heard about the newest and most exciting phone that will be hitting the market. Ah yes you say...the new Apple Phone!!! Well this thing sounds amazing, but there are some definite downsides to the manufacturing of this phone. But Ill wait til there is one in my hands to demo before I get into that. The #1 problem with this phone as of now is what carrier it is launching on. CINGULAR??????What in Gods name would posses them to pick Cingular. Mine as well have picked Revol to carry the damn thing. Guranteed this phone does not hit its full potential until it is on the proper network to not only support the market that this phone is targeted at, but to have a carrier that will be able to provide a reliable service for...
i guess picking the #1 carrier in the US was wrong of them.

well theres is nothing wrong with cingular, being that it is the biggest carrier within the United States. The only thing that i wish to argue is that to purchase the iphone you will need a 2 year contract with cingular Being myself a cingular custome...
I figured APPLE wanted to introduce their iPhone not only on an all digital network but also the largest one in the US not to mention that it is a GSM Network and the only other carrier that you could even mention would be T-Mobile which is defintely ...

Unlocking iPhone

With Apple and Cingular not wanting the iPhone unlocked, how will that work with the U.S. Copyright Office ruling that all cellphones can legally be unlocked?
The legal ruling was that cellphones can be unlocked, not that the companies are legally obligated to unlock the phones for any reason. If Cing and Apple do not want to provide unlock codes (or make it possible to even have an unlock code feature avai...

Absolutely. Like ahopkins24 said, I'll give them a few months to debug and update their software then I am buying it. It is so superior to anything out there or anything the rumor mill says is coming. The naysayers will be out in force just like the p...
When reviewed, it reviews well.

There is alot of stuff in this phone and my fear is that it will be buggy.

I'm already going through that with my 2nd enV.

If it reviews well I will buy 2 8 GB models.
I might buy it if I can get it unlocked and activate it on T-Mob!
🀀 8gb here i come. as a matter of fact get me two. i have a copycat girlfriend
i heard in New York and other cities, people buy after market black ear plugs for their ipods because the white wire is a tell tell sign that they have a ipod and they become a target. I bet we hear horror stories of people getting jacked for their ip...
Hell Yes..i am foaming at the mouth looking at the phone...Have you guys forgotten that the Razr....Yes Crapy Silver razr was 599 when if was first intorduced on Cingular as an exclusive. People ate them up like crazy. I will buy a iphone. it beats ca...

No HSDPA!!! NO $Buy$
No Stereo Bluetooth!!! NO $Buy$

No buy.
While listening to the keynote I was certainly caught in the Jobs Reality Distortion Field. When it comes down to it, I'll probably wait at first. I love the concept of the phone but I'd like to see the bugs get worked out, and how will they address s...
$599 already set aside for this baby. No question!
My contract with Cingy is set to expire within a month or so, so the timing for me is perfect.

I really love my Motorola Ming, though... so I'm still not sure. Plus the iPhone is pretty darn expensive.

What I'm probably going to do is wait seve...

Syncing with Windows PC's?

For those of us who don't know, will the iPhone be able to sync with home computers and laptops that are Windows based PCs? Since it runs OSX, I am not sure. I have an Ipod and it syncs fine, but its not running the OSX software. Has anyone heard? Whats the word out there?
It is compatible with Windows PCs and with Macs. There should be no problems

Embedded Battery?

It appears that the IPhone would have an embedded battery, and I think that would be a major oversight in design, especially for the business-end user. Any thoughts?
That's how they do things - embedding the battery is a design choice, and it saves space. That's how the iPods have always been.

Speaking of Business end users. . . they get nothin'

From the BMG Q&A

Q. Will I be able to get this device und...
Yes, but it has a standard iPod dock connector on the bottom, which means a HUGE range of external battery and charging options will be available from day one.

Jan 18, 2007, 4:05 PM

iPhone mfg cost estimated at $250

that is only for the manufacturing cost. I don't think they are talking about all the time and effort it took apple to come out with this device. and the software that is in this phone. it has a OSX. i will buy one regardless.
I sound like a Douche. ...

Why is it if Cingular comes out with something good before Verizon people call it stupid.. But if Verizon comes out with it first it's awesome.. People from Verizon need to grow up. Verizon Wireless service isn't the best.
Why do you care so much what others think???

Verizon customer interested in iPhone

Help me out on this: I've been with Verizon for ten years. My current contract runs out in December. If I want the iPhone, do I need to somehow migrate from Verizon to Cingular just to get it?
buy the phone at full retail price (and then do what?)

join at&t and have 2 mobile phone numbers

switch to at&t completely and forget about vzw

iPhone sweeter than your sisters Kool-Aid

🀀 This is the sweetest phone to hit the market, not because it by Mac πŸ™„ ,but because we are getting closer to having a reliable all-in-one device. One device that has the power and quality of all the things we carry in our pockets, or backpacks. 8gb flash drive, no its no 40gb but its a step towards the future. 2megpx camera obviously not 5megpx but headed in the right direction. A operating system the works better than the windows mobile, defintently a step in the right direction. Most people cant afford this device, and i am one of them however, i would love to have it! Do i need it no? (OF COURSE I F$#@%ING DO 😲 )I have an iPod, i have a camera, i have a blackberry, however, its new, exciting and just like a new movie, sometim...

I wonder how much www.iphonescoop.com would be worth? I'm thinking about buying it and doing an iphone forum on it... Any suggestions?
Yeah, I'm sure the owners of phonescoop wouldn't have a problem with that at all. πŸ™„

For Rich B

Nothing was mentioned on voice recognition. As a safety issue, I would think the the Big A had this covered? Since you have seen this device, what can you tell us about voice recognition, especially over bluetooth? Thanks
i honestly think that seeing that cool bluetooth headset coming out, that it will be fully voice recognized, well at least the contacts part of it...but then again maybe not, might be like my t-mo dash where u just say the name and it dials haha unlik...
That's my big question. I love the voice recognition on my Samsung SCH-A990. I was surprised voice commands weren't mentioned in the intro, but perhaps with all the touching of the numbers in the address book was intended to make up for the fact the...
I have not touched it in person. The only member of the press that has actually touched it - that I know of - is David Pogue of the New York Times. (That lucky bastard... πŸ˜‰ )

Apple didn't mention voice control, so I have no idea. They are stil...

why no cdma

Did Sprint and verizon miss the boat on this one? Was Apple too hard to work with?
cdma is inferior... also apple wants to distribuite this phone world wide (obviously).. and GSM is considered a world standard.... only the US is behind in this one.. plus VZW and sprint suck.
Jobs' point was that they wanted to grab the widest market possible. Making a phone that works on American CDMA limits their options considerably. With a GSM device, they can sell it to most of the world with no modification. That's the cold hard f...
1. Apple sells to a global market, CDMA is basically North American and a few other places. So they know it will sell in the US, Canada, EU and other countries with GSM.

2. Could it be possiable that VerizonWireless and Sprint are hard to work with...
I'm sure it'll be like the situation with the RAZR- it'll come to CDMA eventually. By then the price will be nice too. 😎
they're probably the most important countries in the world (aside from the US) in terms of consumer electronics.

CDMA isn't just in the US and a couple of other 3rd world countries.

that being said, i totally see why they would make a GSM versio...
This is a marketing issue, not a technology one. Cingular marketing is making all the right moves (First Blackjack, First Blackberry pearl, Exclusive on the Nokia E series........). Exclusives are pretty commonplace -- Sprint and Verizon have taken tu...
Cingular and Apple already have an agreement to do iTunes through Cingular as it is. So making this phone to their company was a give in
