Intel Says It Has a 5G Modem
Intel today announced next-generation modem for mobile devices, aptly named the Intel 5G Modem. Intel says the idea behind the 5G Modem is to help push the development of 5G ahead. The modem relies on key 3GPP 5G NR (new radio) technology, such as massive MIMO, low-latency, and advanced channel coding. It also includes both sub-6 GHz and mmWave capabilities. Intel hopes the modem will support early 5G field trials and at the same time drive the 3GPP NR specification forward. Intel is working with AT&T and other companies to test and define what might eventually be 5G.
Verizon Says Massive MIMO Deployment to Help Customers

Verizon Wireless today said it has deployed FDD Massive MIMO on its network in and around Irvine, Calif. Verizon explains that while Massive MIMO is a 4G LTE-A technology that will help today's phones, it serves as a stepping stone in the slow march toward 5G.

Qualcomm and Nokia today said they plan to jointly test potential 5G technologies in an effort to speed up adoption of the standard. Specifically, the companies intend to conduct over-the-air field trials of 5G New Radio (NR) Release-15, which is still being developed by the 3GPP.

Sprint today voiced its support of the recently ratified NSA 5G NR specification and revealed its own plans for deploying 5G. The specification for NSA 5G NR includes support for up to 100 MHz on a single carrier (in the 2.5 GHz band) versus today's limit of 20 MHz per carrier.
