Facebook to Let Devs Use Phone Numbers to Authenticate Users

Facebook today announced a new feature for developers meant to help ease the process of signing into apps. The new Accounts function works similar to the "sign in with Facebook" tool already in wide use. Consumers will be able to supply their phone number — rather than their full Facebook credentials — to authenticate without the need for a username or password. The tool is similar to Twitter's Digits tool, which the microblogging service introduced several years ago. Developers will be able to use a new SDK to add the Accounts sign-in function to their own apps.
