The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) today announced they have formed a working group to develop a common connector for portable devices. The group will create a specification for devices that get cradled both in cars and indoors. The specification will include both electrical and mechanical factors, and will be designed to work with any connection or media protocol. This could enable consumers to charge their device or even playback media to external devices without special software or proprietary connectors. Many companies have already standardized connectors across their handset lines and a few more have begun standardizing on mini-USB for charging and synchronization, which is a likely choice for this new specification.

Hate the idea!!!

I will be honest that as a sales rep I hate the idea that all chargers might be universal. I hope everyone realizes that if this happens all it will really is force companies to raise the price of others things such as the phones, the plans, etc. Companies will not loose those profits, they will just makes them up somewhere else.

In my mind it falls same idea of using a standard ui for all phones. Let the phone manufactures have there independence and differentiators
Prices on the phones have dropped too low. That's the whole problem. A universal charger may seem to hurt sales, but in reality, it won't. Here's why:

2) You don't have to carry 100 different charg...

anyone else hear a hallelujah chorus?

this will make my life SOOOOO much easier.. carriers will hate it though they probably make a fortune off charger sales
What, charging $20-$30 for a $3 charger is profitable?

It is more than the plug

They are talking cradles, not only the connector. Whatever connector they choose, there will need to be a standard geometry for a cradle mount.
There really aren't that many phones that use a charging cradle anymore. Besides, making one standard for the cradle, then all the phones will look virtually the same.

Don't count on it...

There is way too much money in accessory sales for stores and too much money that would be lost. I would bet my left nut that this will not happen anytime in the near future.
If they get a standard, and all of us could help push it, those companies that use it will accrue an enormous boost in sales.
