Sprint Gobbles Up Affiliate
Jul 11, 2005, 8:38 AM by (staff)
Sprint and US Unwired today announced an agreement for Sprint to acquire US Unwired for approximately $1.3 billion. US Unwired offers Sprint service to over 500,000 customers in nine southern states, including Texas, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2005. The deal will end a series of legal spats between the two companies. Most recently, the company sought an injunction to block Sprint's merger with Nextel, claiming the merger would violate the non-compete clause of the companies' affiliate contract, since Nextel operates in nine of US Unwired's 11 territories. In 2003, US Unwired took Sprint to court claiming unfair business practices. Of Sprint's nine remaining affiliates, Alamosa is the largest. Alamosa also has a non-compete agreement with Sprint that may be violated by the Nextel merger.
