Industry research firm IDC yesterday released its analysis of the global mobile handset market for the 1st quarter of 2003. Worldwide phone shipments grew 16.6% compared to the same quarter a year ago, boosted by demand for new advanced features. LG Electronics moved up to the number five position, with 5.2% worldwide market share in the quarter. Despite dropping out of the top five overall, Sony Ericsson took the number two position in market share of converged devices, thanks to strong sales of its P800 smartphone. Nokia maintained it commanding lead in both the overall and converged device categories, with 35.5% and 57.3% market share, respectively. The second, third, and fourth overall market share positions were held by Motorola, Samsung, and Siemens, respectively.
