That's a pretty dumb argument. If AT&T wanted that money, they would just sell customer's info on their own to 3rd parties.

This isn't as much of a squeeze on their current customers as much as a transition to the EDGE program. The EDGE program offers no additional activation or upgrade fee when signing up for the programs. The easiest way to build value around your new programs and to get more people to transition over to them is to raise the rates on the old programs. A great thought and I would love to see every American receive cell phone reception, but we have to remember these companies are businesses. The primary goal for every business is to make money. So, if the costs outweigh the profit return, I wouldn't expect them to put up too many towers in rural America. I would like to see government grants to smaller cell phone carriers that are willing to put up towers in rural areas. But, then ...

Pretty much industry standard. I don't think they charge upgrade or activation fees on their EDGE program.

Getting rid of device subsidy doesn't mean that you aren't 'growing' or enhancing the network. Part of maintenance includes system upgrades, so rolling out LTE and LTE-A is still on the agenda for AT&T. When the carriers are paying a large amount from the manufacturers for the devices and selling them for less, they are essentially gaining the money back from the higher cost plans in place.
