Contactless credit cards work, too

in the Article: Apple Pay Expands to Costco Warehouse Stores forum

No need to drag out the phone, turn it on, enter a PIN and plop the phone hear the terminal if one has a contactless credit card. They work also on the Costco T&P enabled terminals. No battery power required.

No mention in the article of disadvantages of an unlocked phone, WiFi calling is a feature I can't live without, as the signal is weak in my home. AT&T, for one, does not enable WiFi calling on unlocked phones.

Is that by swipe to simulate a magnetic strip on a credit card, or tap and pay? The last time we used a non-Target credit card at Target, we got hit with a bogus $750 online charge.

maokh said: It is true...about 10-13% of all electricity is standby/vampire/phantom power. But this includes everything from microwaves to dvd players to wall warts. ... Even 1% savings on this massive scale is a lot of energy.... But 1% is still 1%, and if your electric bill is $2000 for the year, and you dutifully unplug every unused charger daily, you will save $20 in a year. Good. That will help pay for the cost of ...

Reading the negatives

in the Article: Review: Samsung Galaxy Nexus for Verizon Wireless forum

Most of the negative comments on the Nexus focus on the phone; its sound, call strength. Then the reviewer seems to highly recommend the device. Perhaps it should be called the Nexus Pocket Computer and drop the phone part. After all, who uses a smartphone as a phone anymore?

Re: Anyway to disable the side button from turning on Vibrate?
Sep 28, 2005, 5:22 AM
in the Kyocera SoHo KX1 forum

Yes, don't hold down the side button :) I have the same problem that occasionally I squeeze that button and set the phone to vibrate only and then wonder why I missed a call. But I find the convenience of being able to turn the ringer off easily outweighs the problem caused by once in a while accidentally squeezing that button.

Geez, mikethestranger, know what you're talking about before you spit it out. I have taken many TDMA phones and activated them with CallPlus, which uses the ATT TDMA system. They aren't restricted to a "local" plan; the CallPlus plan mirrors ATT's national prepay plan and can be used anywhere inthe US on the ATT system and it's affiliates. I've taken a Cingular TDMA phone and activated it on ATT. Nothing is "burned" into the phone. ...

I have been under the impression that Cingular is rather sticky about activating a phone that is not from Cingular, although there doesn't seem to be a technological reason that an ATT TDMA phone such as the Nokia 5165 could not be activated on the Cingular system. I went the other way, and had a Cingular 5165 converted for use on the ATT system. Be careful about who you purchase a 5165 from on eBay. I ...

Re: GSM vs. CDMA vs. TDMA ??
Nov 11, 2003, 11:48 AM

We were with Sprint when they switched from Sprint Spectrum to Sprint PCS. There was a class action suit by the Spectrum customers and Sprint settled by providing replacement phones for all Spectrum customers to convert to PCS, allowing customers to keep their rates as specified in their plans. It was a decent deal from Sprint, but many customers had long waits at the stores, or gave up entirely, when trying to get their replacement phone (they ...

Rich Brome said: TDMA. It's fading out right now. The current TDMA networks will still be active for at least several more years, but as soon as AT&T and Cingular finish building out their GSM coverage to match their TDMA coverage, they'll stop selling TDMA phones, (in a year or so.) And then eventually those TDMA networks will be shut off. . Do you really think TDMA will be "shut off", or sold off. It will make a lot of folks ...

IMHO, you would be doing your Mom a great favor if you found her another cell phone carrier. The happiest day of my cell-phone-life was when I cancelled Sprint PCS a few months ago (after being a Sprint customer since the Sprint Spectrum days). They screwed me on the charges on my PCS plan, and they screwed me on my land line long distance plan. (I had a credit balance of over $4 on my long ...

Featured Article, Prepaid: Exposed, is misleading
Nov 7, 2003, 5:50 AM
in the General forum

The featured article by Carlos Espinal, titled "Prepaid; Exposed" concludes that prepay is expensive. Is keeping a phone in the glove box for emergencies and a few calls a month for $3.33 per month expensive? Not everyone in the country has a cell phone glued to their ear. There are actually some folks, me included, that average a minute or less per day on a cell phone. We use the cell phone once in a ...

Is there a way that "blake" could modify the post and delete the email addy? I use a hotmail address for posting on newsgroups and would normally get 20 to 30 spams per day, until I put a filter stating that the subject line must contain the word "hotmail", otherwise the email is trashed. The filter doesn't reduce the spam flow through the 'net, but cuts down dramatically what gets into my inbox. Chose the word "hotmail" so ...
