Another sub-par phone from Motorola

Aug 1, 2005 by florencetech

It seems to me Verizon is slipping from their grasp on the cell phone industry. Motorola on the other hand has all but decided to intentionally make phones that are below a standard for their place in the industry.

The E815 has all of the standard glitches of every Motorola phone:
*Buggy Software
*Lackluster options
*And who could forget the famous
charging port that the industry
leader refuses to fix..

Bottom line, don't buy this phone or any other Motorola product until they recommit to producing quality instead of quantity.

P.S. I wonder how many people are looking at their 715 and wishing their Verizon sales rep had told them to wait for the better version to come out before purchasing?

Sorry Moto, good phone but not great

After trying out the E815, i just sent it back with my 15 day WFG. Here is my honest review:

Pros: Clear speaker phone, excellent reception (even in poor reception areas)

Cons: Moto forgot to include VCAST software on phone (had to get it flashed at a Verizon store), could not customize outer display (what you have on you inner display will be what is shown on the outside), very very weak vibrate, the phone feels heavy, menu layout definitely inferior to the LG 8000 & 8100, Poor picture quality on camera for a 1+ mega pixel camera (pictures are grainy), cannot view txt messages or picture gallery from outer display.

I will be exchanging this phone for an LG 8100. If I hadn't used the LG 8000 before my E815, I would not have been as dissatisfied. If the 8000 were blue-toothed, I would still have it. And the anticipated music service for the 8100 will be worth the wait (trust me on this one!!). I have also heard that there may be a desktop charger for the 8100 later that has stereo speakers, so that you can transform your charging phone into a mini stereo system. Pretty cool huh?

Overall, I would still recommend this Motorola phone as it does well what a cell phone should do, make & receive calls, but only if none of the other features matter to you. But the truth is, still a step behind LG.

great update to v710

Jul 12, 2005 by imo knowles

I updated my V710 to a XV6600 and that was a great phone and pda but way to much for me. So i went and got the E810 and I'm very happy i did. I love this phone it has everything i want. It feels very solid and the keys are much better than the V710. I can't think of any cons on this phone go and get it.

Nice phone, mine *might* have been defective though...

I'm going to give this phone the benefit of the doubt and say it *could* have been a defective phone because in the two days I have had it I have never said "I can't understand you, what did you say?" as many times in my time having a cell phone as I've had to in the past 2 days with the E815. Again though, it may be that this particular one is defective, it's just almost every call seems garbled on it...I have a V710 on the way now to replace it.

As for the functionality of the phone, it seems to mostly have a strong signal, even in concrete encased basements, the phone looks nice, speaker phone is loud enough, bluetooth, though crippled by Verizon, works well for handsfree, menu is quick and responsive - overall I really like the phone, I just can't handle garbled calls all the time (plus I'd prefer to have something capable of using an analog signal and unfortunately Motorola ditched that when they revised the 710 --> 815.

I haven't tried the EVDO features so I cant comment on that, but to say if I want to watch TV/Video clips, I'll use my 51" HDTV.

As for the camera, this is what I find funny about the reviews I see here, people commenting on the quality of the camera - IT'S A CELL PHONE FOLKS! Seriously, the camera in any phone is a joke and will be for some time. If you want a camera capable of good images, GET A REAL DIGITAL CAMERA. I would personally prefer cell makers give people more options for phones without cameras. But, thats me.

Last but not least, I appreciate that Motorola thinks it's a good idea to sort phone numbers into their own contacts in the address book, but it would be nice if they would let people DISABLE that "feature" as it drives some of us nutts!!! (especially those of us that have hundreds of contacts the majority of which have multiple contact numbers).

Anywho, that's my take on the e815, I've been through 7 cell phones in the past 2 months trying to find something that works the way I need it to...Still looking

this phone was made cheap and i really dont like it. you might as well stay with the v710 b/c both batteries die so fast. its not person friendly and the tru ringtones dont sound good at all... i work for a verizon agent and you would be better off going for the 8100...

Very disappointing

I have had this phone since last August. It periodically acted weirdly, changing ring volume from max to silent without my taking any action. In fact, the phone was in my holster when it happened which should be impossible. It would also disconnect from the BlueTooth when I was driving. I would have to turn the phone off and restart it in order to get it to recognize the BlueTooth again. Doing that on the freeway while driving at 60 MPH sort of invalidates the concept of hands-free.
On the advice of Verizon I brought it to one of their shops and wasted a half hour getting the software updated to the latest version. On the way home it repeated its "run Silent" routine. I had also bought a SDMicro chip for it. When I tried to install it the phone went spastic, flashing on and off and not responding to attempts to turn it off. Only removing the chip ended the problem.
Verizon sent me a replacement. I spent an hour re-entering all of my phone book. The new phone repeated all of the same behaviors, including the flashing when I attempted to install the memory chip. (Radio Shack allowed me to try out a second chip in case it was the problem. It wasn't.)
Without Bluetooth the phone is good, but not any better than the V710 which I owned before. Reception is good, sound quality excellent. But this is supposed to be a BlueTooth Capable phone and it isn't.

Good phone for the price

I recently picked up the new E815 for Alltel, for about $80 after rebate, and I must say, I am impressed so far.

PROs :

- Solid and durable
- Loud ringer
- Clear calls so far
- Camera is better than most I've seen
- Great function
- Easy to use
- Bluetooth :)

CONs :

- Only real con I have noticed so far is that the vibrate is weak.

So far so good, I recommend it for anyone with Alltel looking for a good phone.

pretty sweet

Pretty Good

I owned this phone for a short time. It seemed like a great handset.

PROS: Moto UI--not VZW's, Mac sync works, good reception, clear, features galore.

CONS: Way too big, cheap feeling.

If you love a full-featured phone, this is probably the one for you. If you don't care about all that stuff, this might still be the phone for you. If you are used to small, solid feeling handsets (i.e., Samsungs) and don't care about MP3 players and whatnot, you might want to look somewhere else.
