Turn 3G off? Reprogram PTT button?

I have noticed that battery life is much better then the phone is being used in a non 3g network, can you turn 3g off in a 3g area? Also can you change the PTT button to do something else, say just go to the phone screen?

OK, I just "signed up" for the xda forum, and attempted to do the install. It said I am not authorized. How does one get authorized?
