I am getting one of these in the mail from UPS tomorrow and was looking on the different sites and saw there it does over-the-air updates. How does this work? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks! I'll be using the phone with Cingular service btw. If anyone has any help with anything they've encountered so far with this, please let me know. Thanks!

Someone on Howardforums.com who had his phone flashed with the newest firmware, v5.50 and he said as soon as he did it worked for him on Cingular. FOTA, or firmware over the air updates, will update the firmware for you to the newest version. On T-mobile it doesn't work.

Well, I'll be using it on Cingular, not T-Mobile. So, how will I use the over-the-air updates? How does that work and how will I use it?

You would go to menu>settings>phone>phone updates and select "download phone softw." It will prompt you after that. If it works it will upgrade your firmware to the latest version.

Cool. The phone is supposed to come tomorrow, so I'll try it assuming everything doesn't work right, like the VM indicator. Have people had problems getting to go away or getting it to show up? And what's the VMI you referred to people having trouble with? What about the performance of the phone though? Good earpiece/speakerphone? Reception? Etc...thanks for all of your help! I really, really appreciate it.

I'm with Cingular (have an unlocked 6131). The option on my phone ('install software update') is grayed out, and I'm not able to do the update. Why is that? Why are some people with Cingular able to update & some are not?

The pop/click sounds are getting annoying. I would love to be able to get the newest firmware.

Thanks in advance.

To be able to do FOTA you will either have to use Phoenix to flash the phone, or do like I did and send it to iunlock.com. Your firmware version the FOTA won't work for sure.

The v5.50 flash has been reported to fix the FOTA updates for Cingular customers, VMI issues on Cingular and popping and clicking elimination on all carriers.

I have 3.70 firmware on my 6131 that I just got.....- connected to Cingular - when I try to get the FOTA update I keep getting the error " remote server not responding ".
Is that because my firmware does not support the FOTA or because I can not get connected to the server or what or the server is down?

I have no problems with browsing any other sites?

I have not found anyone who has actually gotten this to work, Has anyone successfully used FOTA on a Cingular or any network?
If so what firmware did you start with and what network?

thanks Kevin

I just called Nokia to ask them about the FOTA and once I said 6131 - he said that is not a US phone - good night and good luck.

What a bunch of AHs!

This seems to be Nokia USA's recent policy - they will only support phones sold in the US. If the phone is actually broken, they will make you send it back to the UK or to the country of origin as determined by the IMEI number on the phone....

Which is why I purchased a 6126.

See if this website helps you with the software update.

Thanks but no, that web site just shows how to get the FOTA update going from the phone. It does not download or push down anything.

this stinks.......

Sorry - I thought that it offered a download via PC to update the phone. I must've clicked on the wrong phone when I was looking at it. ☹️

Looks like sending it in to some place like iunlock.com is your only alternative.

Anyone got any new news with this?

Nokia in UK will not answer my emails about this either....
