Is there a way to lower the volume for the alarm without changing the volume control for receiving calls? Also, do you know if there is a charge for downloading ringtones, or even just browsing them on the phone?

I don't know of a way to adjust the alarm volume, other than you can set it to only sound when an alarm goes off.
If you download ring-tones over the network, yes there is a charge. However, you can put in your own ringtones either with the USB cable or a microSD card.
There is no charge to browse ring tones over the network, but you are probably charged air-time.
