Verizon vs. Sprint

Billiken

Feb 18, 2006, 4:56 PM
I am lookin at this phone (UTStarcom PPC-6700 / XV-6700 / HTC Apache), but I am confused by the offerings from Sprint and Verizon. First, is the phone identical other than the color or are there other differences?

Second, other than coverage areas, what are the service differences? It seems like Sprint offers a lot more than Verizon in terms of television offerings, music, etc.

Third, why is the telephone $100 MORE at Sprint than at Verizon?

Fourth, are the differences in "broadband" coverage areas significant? I assume data transmission speeds are the same on each network.

Appreciate any help.

Thanks,

The Billiken

The Sprint phone is all silver; the Verizon phone has a black face.

Sprint allows the use of EVDO and wi-fi at the same time; Verizon does not.

Coverage area for both are the same in major metropolitan areas; however, you need to look at their coverage maps. All of dead spots in San Francisco occur for all carriers. 😁

Not sure why there is a price difference; I thought about buying a GSM HTC Wizard which is similar without the antenna but the processor speed is 200+mhz vs the 400+mhz of the HTC Apache which is crucial for WinMobile 5 when you have a lot of data (Outlook contacts...)

Verizon has the best EVDO network according to reviews but I have EVDO in most places if not wi-fi.

My EVDO is always on with Sprint and I reall...

Thank you very much. Very helpful.

People at Verizon keep telling me that their network is a zillion times faster than Sprint. And I know that Verizon has a better overall coverage area, but Sprint seems to offer better package.

By the way, and I mean this with all due respect to those who really are knowledgeable, but just about every person I talk to at either a Verizon or Sprint Store/Kiosk knows FAR less about these stupid phones than I do. I just want to find someone who is truly knowledgeable. I don't mind spending the money (heck, I would pay a lot more for the right phone), but the inconvenience of buying the wrong phone is just HUGE so I really want to get the right one.

Anyone else with thoughts on this, I would appr...

You need to speak to the business dept of each of the carriers. Most store personnel know nothing about the WinMobile 5 devices as they are not sold to the general consumer. I got a really knowledgeable tech person helping me when I had problems from Sprint and they said that the store personnel are not trained to sell these devices or troubleshoot them.

Ha ha! Shows what kind of morons Sprextel hires and how lousy their training is. Verizon reps in my area are more then fully trained on selling these devices. Why would Sprint not train their front line on these devices? The data aspect is pure profit.

Whenever I buy, I ask the first person I talk to to direct me to the person in the store who is the most knowledgable. Usually means I have to wait a while, but it's been worth it.

I was a SprintPCS customer waaay back when. Price was good, but coverage wasn't so good. I could never make/receive calls at my house. Then SprintPCS turned into Sprint, and I moved to a new house, but still I couldn't use the phone at the new house! After several years of lousy coverage, I left them for Verizon. Sprint even tried to keep me around by sending me a new phone for free. I gave it a shot, but still no joy. So I gave the Sprint phone to my mother in law in Delaware and she quickly concluded that it was about worthless to carry the thing (and that maybe her son-in-law wasn't so nice after all). She graciously gave it back. Yes, I pay out the wahzoo for VZW now (and she's on my family share plan), but at least I feel like ...
