Phone insurance - needed?

thosp

When purchasing the E815, Verizon (or its reps) offers 2 types of phone insurance: Extended Warranty for $2/month and Total Equipment Coverage for $6 (includes the Extended Warranty plus 'If your phone or accessories are inoperable for any reason—lost, stolen, damaged or malfunctioning—you can be covered.' NOTE the phrase 'can be covered'.

Since I am in the process of buying 2 phones, that works out to $120/year for the Total coverage for both phones.

Is there a strong sentiment as to which approach is better - self insuring or purchasing one of the warrantees? If warranty, which one?

TIA

Uh...yeah. Oooook. I've heard that *really works* - riiiight.

Anyways, insurance depends on a couple of things. 1 - how much it costs to buy your phone at full retail. 2 - if you have to kind of cash sitting in your bank account to be able to do it 3 - how hard you are on your phones.

I don't believe there's any consensus, really, except that insurance on a very low end phone is pretty much a waste (in two years, you'll pay for insurance the amount that you would pay for the phone), whereas insurance on a high-end pda phone is much more worthwhile.

Keep in mind that in order to actually use your insurance, you have to pay them $50 each time. The full retail price of the e815 is $320. So over two years, you'll pay $480 in insurance f...

Thank you for your reply it helps to make a decision when you look at the costs like that. I have a bit of a problem with the idea of purchasing extended warranties when the costs end up being close to the cost of the item over a short period of time.

I would like to go over your figures though.

VW's web site shows the cost for the 'Total Equipment Coverage' at $6/mo (which is $72/yr). For two phones that works out to $144/yr, or $288 for 2 years, not the $480 you mentioned.

With the $50 deductible, that is $328 if I had to replace one phone, and $378 for both phones. Where do you get $10/mo for each phone.

Also, I would like to know where to pay #320 for a new E815, I only see it for $400 at Amazon. It would help to know a...

Sorry - I misread your post and thought you said it was $120/year for each phone, so like you said my figures are completely off. If you have two phones at $6/month, like you said, you'll pay $288 for both of them over two years, so if you replace one at $288 + $50 = $338, you'll come out about even with just buying another phone at full retail price.

On the other hand, I've never had the occassion to use the insurance, so it's been all good for me. :-)

I got the $320 from the verizon website. I logged into "My Account", then under the picture of my phone there's a link to "Upgrade to a new phone", where it has the e815 at $320. fyi - Full retail for the KX1v is $190. You could probably also call customer service and ask how much it c...

Anytime you pay for insurance, home, auto whatever, it is a gamble. You hope that you don't ever have to use it, but when you do you are glad you have it.

A few years ago, I refused to pay insurance. Why waste my money right? Well I dropped a phone in a pool and I was SOL. I ended up buying a phone on eBay because it was cheaper then buying one at the store. After that, I have always had the insurance.

I am glad I did. This summer. I was riding my motorcycle, and my phone fell of my belt clip (I know, should of had it more secure). It only cost $50 to replace it as opposed to paying full retail. Money well spent in my opinion.

And BTW, whining and moaning to Verizon does not guarantee you a free phone. Verizon is a multi-...

hehe - "This summer. I was riding my motorcycle, and my phone fell of my belt clip". See my other post about how some people are more accident prone than others. ;-)

(fyi - I agree with your post completely, it's a gamble, sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't.)
