Newbie Question About Unlocked Treo

I'd appreciate it if someone could explain what the difference is between a locked vs unlocked Treo 650. Are Cingular dealers willing to unlock these phones? If so, at what price. Is it best to buy an unlocked phone from the Cingular retailer or on the internet?

Thanks,

Brian

A locked phone is one that's locked to a particular carrier. For example, if you have a locked cingular phone, a person with a SIM card from another carrier wouldn't work in the phone. If a phone is unlocked, then you can use a SIM from any carrier. People usually want an unlocked phone because it can be used with any carrier. The unlocked phones usually cost more because of this. I'm not sure if Cingular will unlock the phones for you or not. Check with Palm and see if the ones there are unlocked. I know of a place that will unlock them for $50.

I would like to know where i can unlock mine. I tried buying an unlocked one in Hong Kong, but it was over $700 US. So i am going to stick with the Cingular one. But would really like if it was unlocked so i can use it in Hong Kong. thanks
