M-mode incompatiable with Cingular

Just got of the phone with a Cingular rep who said that the Audiovox SMT 5600 is programmed to be used with AT&T's M-mode for data, and that this would make it incompatible with the Cingular's data network. Hence you could unlock this phone and use it as a phone on Cingular, but you may have problems with data. I am taking this with a grain of salt because every time I speak with a new rep at Cingular I get a different answer.

Has anyone here unlocked this phone and started using this phone on Cingular? Have you encountered any data problems?

Audiovox is currently working on a software upgrade to make the 5600 compatible with Cingular. That is directly from the horse's (Audiovox) mo...

😁
Excellent news! I don't suppose you have any information on approximately when the new Cingular 5600 will be available?

No clue... the e-mail I saw from Audiovox said that, and pretty much only that.

I was in a Cingular store today outside of Dallas and the rep told me that he thought they could have them as early as Wednesday of this week.

They had promotional, wall-sized banners with the phone on it and the Cingular logo at the bottom.

I called a over a dozen Cingular stores here in Southern California. Every single one of them was clueless that Cingular might be releaseing their own version of the Audiovox SMT 5600. In fact they were adamant that this was NOT going to happen. Perhaps Cingular is rolling out this promotion in the mid-west first - or perhaps Cingular is just running around with its head up its ass.

I think the problem is the Cingular side of the merger is hearing one thing and the AT&T side is hearing another.

I saw the promo banner with a Cingular logo in a former AT&T store. Maybe you should try a former AT&T store in So Cal and see what they say. I would be interested to find out if the fromer AT&T reps due in fact know more about this phone rollout.

This is a great question.

I want to switch from AT&T's service to Cingular and try the Motorola Razr V3 for 30 days, but I can only do so by migrating over to Cingular's service. There's no migrating back to AT&T. I'd have to give up my Audiovox and Cingular has no equivalent to it. I hate this. 😡

I called several former AT&T stores in Southern California. All of them were clueless. I also emailed Audiovox directly. They also seemed to be unaware of any plans by Cingular to offer the SMT5600. Below is the email conversation.

"I have heard that Audiovox may be releasing an updated version of the SMT 5600 (formerly AT&T) for the Cingular network. If this is the case what is the estimated time frame for when Cingular customers would have access to these phones?

Thanks very much"

"Dear Joe,

Thank you for your email.

In regards to the SMT5600, we have not been notified of an updated version at this time. Please check back at a later date.

Thank you and regards. "

I'm a Cingular customer in Northern California and went to the local ATT turned Cingular store in Walnut Creek over the weekend. They have the 5600 in stock but told me that I would have to drop Cingular and sign up on an ATT plan if I wanted it.
