Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon)
Available on AT&T Wireless website, but they suck...
Well, the Audiovox SMT 5600 is available from attwireless.com, but they suck. They require that you buy their data plan for the life of the phone. So you cannot buy the phone if you do not want their crappy mMode service. Also, you can't cancel the data plan later without canceling your service. So even if I get the data plan now, I can't cancel it later without canceling my service altogether.
Also, you can't use this phone on a shared minutes plan because of the data requirement. My wife has been looking to switch carriers, and I figured I could just add her to my plan. But I guess not.
I want this phone for Outlook synchronization and as an MP3 player. So I couldn't give a rats a** about having a data plan. As far as I'm concerned, ...

Invariably they will offer this phone without the accompanying data plan--as soon as they see how many people are buying the phone then canceling that portion--or just taking the phone to another provider entirely. But even if/when that happens, it will be months from now. Maybe even a year. Yeah, quite retarded.
T-Mobile looked like it was going to do the same thing with the HP 6315--they had these bundled plans which had unlimited hotspot and Internet added in but the minutes sucked for anyone who was serious about using the phone as a phone. The good news was that they also allowed you to activate the HP on any of their normal plans.
I am hoping AT&T is doing the same thing: Present them with the plans AT&T WANTS you to be on, but ...

Yeah, I am interested in hearing what they tell you. The operator basically told me that when you activate this phone, you must have a data plan. The only way to get around it would be to buy the phone and then just pop in your existing SIM and not tell AT&T you have this phone.
It really is amazing that AT&T can suck so much, yet still be in business. Cingular has better data plans and minutes (Only problem for me is they don't have service in Colorado).
For example, on Cingular, $2.99 gets you 500K of data. While on AT&T, $2.99 is the monthly charge to activate the data plan, but then you pay 2 cents a kilobyte for data. There is no monthly allowance. Plus, you can't even get the $2.99 plan for the 5600. Just like you can't get the $...

Actually, T-Mobile has THE best data plan period: $29.99/mo unlimited data. If you have a voice plan of $40/mo or higher on the same account, that goes down to $19.99. WAY better than AT&T OR Cingular.

If the AT&T data plan on this phone is in fact an unlimited Internet plan for $25/mo, that would mean that AT&T is now at least COMPETITIVE with T-Mobile which could be a reason for me to stay with them as opposed to switching to T-Mobile. And if Cingular upholds the contract terms after the takeover, I may just stay put.

The difference between the $7.99 mMode plan and the unlimited plan is that with the new Audiovox phone, you will be transmitting alot more data when you access the browser. This means that you will need alot more MB. You really can sign up with a lesser plan if you like, but it will end up costing you a pretty penny.
The PDA plans are a little different because, again, you are accessing the "actual" internet, in other words, you're not using strictly the WAP browser anymore. (that's a limited sort of internet)

Is the camera about as good at the MPX220? I know they have different resolution but the MPX220 camera is just ok from the pictures I've seen.

Is the MPX220 bug with voice dialing on a headset fixed?
I've seen conflicting information on the color depth of the MPX220 screen - is it 16 or 18bit?

not true. cingular gave me, a new customer, 19.99 a month unlimited data plus 1500 text messages and 200 mms! its the best deal ive seen. doesnt require a certain voice plan or anything. u want data, u can have it.

I see no reason why AT&T would not also impose the same requirement on the MPX220. It has the same OS, and the same capabilities (more or less). So either AT&T has to change their policy on smartphones/PDA phones, or they will continue to force crappy plans on their customers (at least until they are absorbed by Cingular).
