unlocking phone

I apologize if this question has been answered, but I was just wondering if someone could tell me what exactly unlocking the phone does? From what I gathered, it does something for international calling, and also for taking a phone to another provider.

its for allowing your phone to be used on another domestic carrier as fo right now (i havent haerd of a cell phone company here locking htem for international carriers) it refers to a sim lock
