I had the same problem with the USB connection too, but I solved it -- Actually the problem was in my system detecting the new USB device Motorola V710, it couldn't find the driver. To resolve that, point the update driver dialog to your \program files\mobile PhoneTools\inf directory. The driver will be loaded and phone tools will be happy!
