Mobile Office Kit and Mobile Phone Tools

Is there a good reason to get Verizon's Mobile Office Kit and (or instead of) Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools? From what I've seen on Verizon's site, their kit comes with a cable and some 'internet accelerator' software I wouldn't use. Motorola's comes with a cable and some tools to manage contacts stored on the phone, set up appointments, and connect to data networks.

Well, I purchased the Mobile Office kit for the v120e. It came with a data cable, some proprietay software from verizon that allows you to connect to Quick2Net or Express Network, and a phone book program (quicklink mobile). Honestly, I got MPT for free and thats the only program I use. You can setup Quick2Net and express network through Mobile Phone Tools. In fact, if you change the initialization string and the username/password in MPT, you can get free Express Network access (With speeds up to 115 Kbps, however, actual speed is around 85 kbps in strong signal strenth areas, still faster than dial up 🙂 ) If you want to know, send me a message and I'll give you a tutorial. Your best bet is MPT with a data cable.

I definitely wouldn't recommend the Verizon Mobile Office Kit.
I didn't know better at the time, and purchased the V710 with the MOK when it first came out -- and have been regretting it ever since.
The contact interface (Phone Book manager) sucks. you have to export your outlook contacts and import them into this tool. To edit any entries (like image or ringtone) you have to export you "phonebook file" to a csv and hand-edit it.
I swear if Verizon wasn't used by my company I'd switch in a heartbeat (I could go on forever but will end my rant).
Anyways, I'm going to purchase the MPT3.0 which just came out and _has_ to be better. If it's as good as what phonephreak04 says, i'll letcha know.

MPT is MUCH better for Outlook sync. I have not used my phone as a modem (ask phonephreak04) and from threads I have read, MPT will not edit or load images/rings. TF is easiest for images/rings. With the moto cable that comes with both MPT or MOK, I have read that you can free download BitPim (search here and HoFo) and edit files and even remove the stock images and rings.

I bought MOK (for V710) and it has the V710 driver. I did not like the phone book transfer and it does not transfer Outlook calendar. I returned MOK but having installed I had the V710 driver from it. MPT 2.xx does not have the V710 driver. maybe the MPT 3.xx does, I don't know. MPT is a true sync for Outlook Calendar and contacts. {Remember that the ObeyMeMoto v...

I _just_ downloaded the MPT3.0 and installed. All I have to say is don't waste your money on the MOK.

If you're looking for a contact manager it's heads above what the MOK is. Installation was painless (maybe it's b/c I have MOK installed too -- but V710 is supposed to be natively supported). Not sure how MPT2.0 is, but 3.0 brings up a "virtual phone" of the V710 on your desktop which is kinda cool looking.

The contacts features is the best part to me especially since this is what I was looking for -- it lets you synchronize your outlook directly to your phone.

But like redrockhicker pointed out -- Like version 2.0, the 3.0 version of MPT has the "Multimedia Center" disabled. So you still can't transfer images, ringtones, or video...

I have US Cellular but purchased the T-Mobile version of MPT 2.0 with data cable. I went home and downloaded the MPT upgrade to version 3.19 and (after 2 hours of initial frustration trying to configure the dang thing) have been happily and more importantly, *easily* transferring pictures, ringtones, and mp3s.

However, two versions of the v710 appear in the selection list: v710 and v710m. Both work, but choose v710m if you want to use the multimedia center tool.

I say all that, but as larry27502 alluded to, it may be the difference between verizon's version of the v710 vs. USCellular and Alltel.

It's worked for me since Sunday afternoon, anyways. My advice would be to check the http://www.bvrpforums.com/ website. It was invaluable t...

What I did is found version 2.16 through shareazaa - why? Because 3.11 retail is lame and will not allow you to do a live update.

There are two versions of v710 as leander says, the v710m is the uncrippled version of the phone, but not what Verizon sells.

MPT has trouble if you "force" it to use v710m, at least in my case. Initially it looks like it will work, but I cannot transfer anything to the phone and it will then lose connection.

I am still messing with it, after I change the firmware, hopefully this will change.

I've installed the V710M version with the SuperDave flash, and am able to transfer files using Bluetooth. But the transfer rate is incredibly slow. A 3 MB mp3 file can take 20 minutes.

I can't seem to install the V710M driver using the USB interface. MPT 3.19 automatically detects the V710.

Two questions.

1. Should the download via Bluetooth be that slow? Just doesn't seem reasonable.

2. Is there a work around for installing the V710M using the USB cable? Would that speed things up?

Thanks

The bluetooth specification is incredinbly slow for transfer of files. It can take anywhere from 3-10 minutes depending on the size of the mp3. If you have a USB connection and you are transferring large files, I would recommend this instead. Or just put the tranflash in your card reader and transfer that way.

I do have a USB connection. But I'm not able to install the V710M when I connect to MPT. The computer automatically installs the standard V710. Any ideas of how to make MPT think my USB connected V710 is a V710M?

Well I just got done dinking around with MPT for the last 30 mins or so searching the registry, tweaking ini files and doing everything in my power into tricking MPT to think I had a v710m via USB cable. Unfortuneately, I was unsuccessful doing so. I would say you are suck using a Bluetooth connection or your Transflash at this point.

Thanks for giving it a try. I tried to find a usb driver for the V710m and rename it--but I have no idea which driver is for which device.

I'll keep working on it.

After installing PST I was able to get MPT to work. Cool interface etc. However, I was not able to do anything with my phonebook. I wasn't able to see whats in the phone and was not able to transfer anything to it. I was able to handle the Calendar feature but the main reason why I got the cable AND the software (I was stupid) was to handle the phonebook. What am I doing wrong. Some of you say you were able to. Was it the flash that disabled this feature?

Good news (at least to me). I was able to get the thing working but only after installing the correct version. Maybe the initial install had some problems but I had to install using the Mobile_Phone_Tools_3_VStuff.rar. It did give me some trouble connecting to the phone but I think that was just because I already had the phone connected when trying to launh the program. I simply disconnected the phone from the PC, started the program, connected the phone when it asked and voila! I'm up and running. Everything that I need to work does. 😁
