Dear Motorola,
I am extremely disappointed with the sound quality of your v710 phone.As a user of a motorola 270c for the past 2/12 years I expected very high quality. I looked forward to stepping up to a phone with so many features as this one: great internal screen,bluetooth, mp3, voice dial,etc
There are many things I can quibble with, such as the flimsy design of your keypad, the inability to use the speakerphone with the case closed, or the really tacky looking external screen. I would keep the phone if those were my issues. But the sound quality is amongst the most tinny distorted sound I've heard in 12 years of owning a variety of cell phones.

Maybe when you swapped the phone, you got another returned phone. Cuz this phone has the best sound quality that i've heard. (It's just that the sound is low.) But i can live with it.

I would have to agree. This is my 2nt cell, LG VX4400 was my first. The sound quality of both the ear peice and the speaker phone completely blow my old LG out of the water. I really don't see why people are bashing the sound quality...

Sound through the ear piece of the phone is low, but clear. I admit that I have to strain to hear conversations, unless I'm in a quiet location. However, the speaker phone is the best of any cell phone to date...loud and clear. And, when I use the HS820 headset, the sound quality is as good as a land line. ๐

I have 3 v710's, and they all sound fine. In fact, I have to turn DOWN the volume at times. Sounds to me like the people complaining about low volume must have gotten lemons ....

The sound is alright. The earpiece volume fluctuates highly when not placed directly over the ear canal. But at the sametime I like this because once you get used to it the earpiece volume is fine and it also give you a little privacy because even at max others around you cannot hear your conversation.

1. An earpiece should not be designed where there is such a small margin of error for placing the earpiece to the ear. If you experiment with the v710 - you will find that moving the earpiece even 1/8 of an inch can have a DRASTIC effect on volume. This is because of the "small slit" design. If there were multiple openings, this would not happen - This small slit is very easy to push against the cartilage of your ear - thus blocking almost all sound. The fact that the slit is arranged linearly along the X-axis of the earpiece makes this even more probable.

I agree just like the T720 I can hold the damn thin a foot in front of my face with speaker phone OFF and still hear the phone. you guys are deaf, dumb and blind. if you can't line up the phone with your ear, then its scary how the hell you find the keyboard to complain about it. ๐ ๐คฃ .

Well said! I couldn't agree more. What angers me about all of this, is that this is Motorola, who has been making phones for years! If it were any other upstart phone company, I'd say, 'nice first try -- hopefully they'll learn'
But this is frickin Motorola!!! And our we (the fools who spend $250+ for this phone) the FIRST ones to notice this problem? Was this missed by a team of engineers? Quality control people? alpha and beta testers?

You need to chill out. There is no way Moto can design a perfect phone, which the v710 is, and it not be flawless. Do you know how many circuits and traces are in that phone. I dont think so, and plus even on top of that the software that has to be developed to run it. The phone has everyone, its not easy to develop software that can integrate everything together in one nice neat little package and have it work flawlessly the first time. Everyone really needs to get a life and stop bashing this phone. This phone is the best one out there and I dont see another phone that gets 400+ pages either. Iโm sure there are fewer detractors for this design than there are those who appreciate it and the screen real estate it allows. My Samsung SCH-A530 had the same problem you describe, but once I became used to where the phone was held next to my ear, the problem was eliminated.

I have some interesting information that I think will surprise some of you who claim this phone is "plenty loud".
My v710 started acting funny earlier in the week. When I'd receive an incoming call - I'd hit "answer" and the phone would display "connected" - but there would be no sound, and the person on the other end couldn't hear me either. Basically- the earpiece and mic were both dead.
When I'd hang up the call and try again - both were still dead. I tried turning on the speakerphone - dead too. No sound from the phone at all.
The only thing that worked was to power the phone down and back-up again.
This happened on 3 separate days, so last night, I brought the phone in for an exchange.
Now - I am one of those people who...

Phone loses sound. i get the same issue. i am on my 5th phone. i cannot replicate the issue on demand but have seen other sites that report it is an issue with scrolling or another series of buttons.
i have talked to an Alltel representative and have been getting into some battles. Since there is no offical notification by Motorola they are saying it is reception.

I agree with you 100% about the sh***y earpiece design on this phone, which is why returned it after one day and bought the LG7000--at least until a Motorola phone (that works well as a PHONE) is available from Verizon. I could live with the really bad (and it IS worse than other phones) earpiece design and placement if the volume wasn't so freakin' low (there's no comparison to the high earpiece volume on the LGs). I really like everything else about Motorola handsets, and really want another up-to-date model, but not until I can hear my phone conversations on 'em.

This reportedly works on most v710 handsets, but some are already at max. It worked greaet on my personal handset:
1 Enter the "Opcode Menu" by pressing: MENU 048263 * (you'll have to enter it rather quickly).
2 Enter 54* and press OK. This will suspend the phone and dim the backlight.
3 Press the external camera button to turn the backlight back on. You will see "SUCCESS".
4 Press BACK.
5 Enter 5*0*15 and press OK. This will max out the system volume of the handset. You can use any number from 0-15 as the third digit, but even at level 15, the phone could be louder.
You should see SUCCESS.
6 Press BACK.
7 Press CANCEL to exit the Opcode Menu...
