same here, once the merger goes through the coverage of the networks will be similar. I'm sick of this ****. I will fight my ass off to get my money back from the v710, this is no way to do business.

What are the chances of another carrier offering to pay the early termination fee of the current carrier to switch?

I would say slim to none. But I will pay whatever i have to to get rid of the headaches. If it wasn't for good service I would have been gone long time ago. LETS HOPE FOR AT&T and CINGILAR. I know for a fact that GSM in Europe is unbelievable so why not in US?

It's only a matter of time...hopefully the exact time my contract is over with Verizon 🙂

GSm does not have the call copacity of CDMA, it is a lesser techniligy based off TDMA. And cingulars and att&t s network will still be smaller than VZW. SO have fun.

This was posted before. It makes a good case for CDMA. The future of wireless really is about data and multimedia.
----------------------------------
Well, I said I'd do this, but I have been extremely busy and haven't had the chance. i still don't, so this will be abbreviated.

Many people wonder what carrier to go with, and you'll see arguements over coverage and features from one carrier to the next. Most don't even realize what CDMA, TDMA, or GSM stand for, let alone the advantages of each. So while my expertise is in the CDMA World, I'll let other experts of TDMA and GSM offer a technical discussion to their advantages.

CDMA- Code Division Multiple Access! What does that mean. In Analog, there is one voice call (one user) per c...

If you are in AZ, then waiting until the merger completes and signing up with Cingular is not going to get you anywhere, because until now, there ARE NO CINGULAR towers in AZ. So guess what?? You're going to end up going on AT&T's GSM network which SUCKS, and is growing at a snail's pace compared with Verizon's CDMA tower installations.

GSM Also has a nasty habit of creating dead spots in the middle of the city where I live. Talk to anybody who lives in the city on some form of GSM and they can probably name a few.

Sounds like it to me. The third quarter results are in and those two companys lost the most customers in the third quarter. Can't give specifics, they should be printed in newspapers and magazines soon... but VZW beat ever other carrier in every catagory for the third quarter

GSM and TDMA are inferior technologies to CDMA. Go look it up if you're wondering why, I'm not going to explain here (actually someone did a good job earlier in this thread). So then 'Why is all of Europe and the world using GSM instead of CDMA?' . Well to ask that question implies that the best man always wins, etc. Beta was a better video format than VHS, but look which won out. Kerry was a better candidate, but....etc., etc... Sometimes its not about what's 'best', but the circumstances surrounding.

In the case of GSM, it was probably a less expensive technology to deploy, and was one that made it a lot easier to connect the entire European Union together. I'm sure there was a reason, but it wasn't b/c it was superior to CDMA. ...

But one thing's for sure, as someone who travels to Europe every now and then, it sure would be great to be able to 'swap out' cards and use my phone over there like GSM users can.

Well, the biggest reason why GSM took off is because CDMA wasn't on the market when they were making GSM.

Like I've been saying over and over again.

UMTS uses the CDMA on-air format. CingATT will be rolling it out and will eventually even be able to roll it out in the 800 MHz band. CingATT, if they don't blow it, has the ability to take on Verizon in the next few years.

Nice! But hasn't ATT invested heavily in TDMA? And doesn't their investment in Cingular imply that they will now be heavily investing in upgrading the GSM network and moving customers over to it? Or did you explain this somewhere else in which case I just missed it.

TDMA is being phased out by everybody. Since there are still many legacy phones, Cingular will have to keep it going for a while. As traffic diminishes they will move active channels from TDMA to GSM where needed.

The issue with Cingular is and remains coverage. It will take them a while to truly integrate the ATT network, but for now they are allowing you to roam to both networks regardless of which carrier you signed up with. The problem is that your phone may or may not operate on both US bands (850 and 1900) and thus may or may not able to benefit from the expanded network. The worldwide bands are 900 and 1800. Other than Moto, most phone are tri-band and the choice of bands does vary by phone; Moto is making mainly quad-band now (i....
