The hardware technically can support 262,000 colors, but Android 1.x only supports 65,000, so - at least with current software - the display is only showing 65,000 colors.
Honestly, I've never been able to tell the difference on any phone. I don't think it's nearly the issue some people make it out to be.
Agreed, the sheer magnitude of the difference in those numbers makes most people believe it equates to an insane degredation in quality, but it certainly doesn't appear as such. The Hero's screen is very nice, bright, and vivid colors. Perhaps not the sharpest, but even iPhone loses clarity once people put an invisible shield or some other protector on the screen.
BTW, what will 2.0 support? We are set to receive 2.0 sometime in the not so distant future.
I've also asked HTC what their phones will support when they have 2.0. I have yet to hear back on that, either.
