When starting a new text massage (from the messaging widget), is there any way to tap in the contact(s) names without typing the name(s)?

Also, anyway to add birthday information to contact from handset...seems like the only way to do so is edit on google calendar (computer); moreso, other dates of significance (ie anniversary) don't even populate the calendar; any advice?
