Did they change the charging/data port on the 3G? I was told my old ipod cords would work with it but it gives me an error and does not work? just curious

I have an ipod charger/FM transmitter from Belkin and when I plug my iPhone 3g in I get a "not supported message" and it asks me if I want to switch to airplane mode. I say no and go about my business. The charger works fine and so does the FM transmitter.
