Using Wi-Fi on this phone…

Apr 1, 2008, 3:07 AM
Can anyone tell me if I can use wi-fi on this thing without constantly defaulting to GPRS when out of range? I mean, I want to be able to use what feature I want, when I want. I don’t want to pay for a data plan but I want to check my email at hotspots around the city. On my S710, I needed to app unlock the phone before I could install a third party application to block GPRS service. The GPRS would kick in when the wi-fi was out of range. Is it possible to block GPRS and only use GPRS on a Pearl?

Yes, it is posisble to ONLY use WiFi and never use GSM or GPRS...at least that's how it works on the Curve 8320 for T-Mobile.

You simply set the Mobile Data settings to Wifi only and turn off Mobile data. You can also set which you want to be the preferred connection, i.e. Wifi>Mobile or Mobile>WiFi.

Am I understanding this correctly, that a data package wouldn't have to be purchased to utilize some of the Blackberry features such as WiFi?

AT&T told me that without a Blackberry data package, I wouldn't have much success.

You are correct. You do not have to have the data package and can use the wi-fi, but you do have to be somewhere you have wi-fi and you will not be able to do the bb email only surf the web.

I have my 8120 set to only use wi-fi for data services. I called up at&t and asked them to disable edge on my fone. now the home screen only shows gsm as opposed to edge. I read somewhere that if you dont want to dsable edge this way, u can also temporarily rename the edge network to an invalid name so it defaults to use wi-fi only. When u want to use edge u rename the invalid name to the to the proper one and then use edge only.
