does anyone know what is to stop someone from unlocking this and using it in the US with a T-Mo or ATT sim?

because it only supports 900/1800 GSM frequencies and not the 800/1900 used in the USA.

Correct, it doesn't support the bands that are used by the GSM carriers in the US. But the Sprint version is already unlocked so when you go to Europe you could use a SIM card from one of the carriers over there. Verizon's is locked so you must use their SIM card.

you can get it unlocked at no charge if you want. you just need to call them and they will do it. 😁
