3G iPhone firmware update

I have read in 2 different places, one was an article last Jan in NY Times that advised sources in apple stated that the iPhone could be updated to a 3G phone thru a firmware update later on. Another site a person advised "If there is a WCDMA chipset in the iPhone, just not enabled, then all it would take is a firmware update." Is any of this true? Also I've been looking at videos of iphone vs 3G phones and there doesn't seem to be much difference in speed. Is it worth waiting for a 3G Iphone or should I just get one now?

no the iphone cannot be upgraded to 3g. that has to all do with the HARDWARE. people time and time have opened the phone up and said the radio antenna is not a 3g chipset. if you wait the earliest you probaly will see it is july. why cause steve aint gonna release a 3g iphone a quarter after he just released it in europe. if you want it now go get it, it's a really really great phone! if you continue to wait you will never get one cause technology is a day to day thing now. something better is always on the horizon.

Bingo. It's a hardware thing, not a software thing, and there's no 3G radio chip in the current iPhone, so software updates won't help there. ☹️

There won't be a 3G iPhone until summer or fall, when the iPhone launches in Asia. Apple will have a 3G iPhone then because if they didn't, the iPhone would be laughed out of Japan and Korea, where everyone either has 3G servic...

Definitely no 3G until summer or fall. The SDK comes out in late February then the next product update will be the MacBook Pro. It will get the new Penryn chips and a trackpad that operates like the one on the Macbook Air does.

Interesting. When do you think the MacBook will be updated? I find the MB Pro to be a bit pricey for what it offers, ditto the MB Air.

I love my MB Pro. Best laptop I ever owned. My guess is late March, early April for that update.
