So...I plugged in my old iPod earphones to the iPhone headphone jack and they didn't work.

Can you only use the supplied earphones with iPhone??

The problem is that the headset jack is recessed pretty deep. I use the Koss Ear Plugs so I had to trim away the cover on the end of the plug (on the Koss) and the I filed the plastic around the plug to be smooth and round and it fits perfectly.

So the problem with your headset is that it just isn't sitting down far enough into the jack.
Hope that helps you out.

Thanks for the info on the headphone jack. I also noticed that the plug was a little different (three lines instead of two, the extra probably for the microphone). I don't think I will be modifying my earphones, though.

Anyways, another slight annoyance just discovered. I have a 40Gb iPod, and the data/power cable has the option of USB or Firewire connections. Well, the firewire one will not communicate with my Mac Mini, only the USB. Is this an "Appleism"

the difference you are seeing in your plug and the iPhone plug is that your iPod headset is only for listening. The headset that comes with the iPhone is also used for hands free calling.
