iphone contract

Can someone explain this to me? Lets say at this point I do not have service with AT&T/Cingular.

My understanding is you purchase the iphone (8Gig) in the box through at&t or an apple store for $399 (flat rate for new or old customers?).

AT&T doesn't hook it up for you - you bring it home and hook it up to AT&T service yourself through itunes.

At this point you are in a 2 yr contract.

If a new iphone comes out in a year and I really want it, can I get it even though I have another year left on my contract? This goes back to my question at the top.. would the price of the phone be a flat rate for new and old customers, or more expensive?

Thanks in advance for the info

If Apple holds to same standards as the frist Iphone then you would be able to buy the new one when it comes out at a flat rate, no discounts of any kind. Also you would end up signing a new two year contract when you hook up the iphone to your line. Under the current Iphone when you buy a new one to replace a broken/lost/stolen phone you sign another contract everytime you do this. If your a first time customer to the current Iphone/AT&T then either apple or AT&T stores sell the phone then you activate it through ITunes on your computer, also selecting plan and how many txt msgs you want to have. Hope that helps
