Ringtones on iPhone without iTunes

I heard there was a way to put ringtones onto the iPhone without buying the songs. It has to do with changing the extension of the song clip from m4r to m4a or something like that and putting it into the ringtones file on iTunes but I haven't been able to get it to work. If anyone knows how to do it, please let me know. Thanks

I use software called iToner. I edit the song to the clip I want for a ringtone using Audacity (free audio editor) and then, using iToner, it loads directly to the iPhone WITHOUT using iTunes. That way, when iTunes updates come out to block the "workaround" ringtones, mine will still work.

iToner is only compatible with Macs. If you use windows, I don't know.

trust me. Apple will do a destroyer update for that. Now that they're making money off of ringtones.

If you have iTunes version 7.4.2 - the renaming loophole was closed by Apple. Download a program called AppTapp or iToner. I use AppTapp and it works great.
