Buying the iphone at the store w/out activation

Since the iphone can be activated at home via iTunes, is there any reason that the person planning to activate the phone needs to be there in person?

Yes everyone that wants one has to be there. There will be only 1 phone sold per customer..So if you have a family plan and want 3 iphones all 3 people need to be there, if only one shows up then only 1 will be sold

Right, but let's say you want one and have an appointment at the same time, could someone else buy it for you if they weren't getting one themselves?

I would think so. As long as Apple and AT&T stores will just take your money, end of transaction. It seems like that will be the case.
