Is there a way to assign a distinctive ring to a contact or listing in my contacts list?

Yes! When you create the contact you can assign a distinctive ring. Hint! they must be saved in the application data/sounds folder.
You can save ringers to the memory card, but you need a program called SmartTweaker to do this, and also look for a program called Photo Contacts Pro. This will enable full screen caller ID photos and custom ringers as well.
