Cingular 8525 vs. Cingular Treo 750
It looks like the 8525 will beat the Treo 750 with a faster processor and more memory.
Any thoughts of why one would buy the Treo 750 ( whenever it comes out) over the 8525?

I would personally say the only reason why someone would opt for the treo as opposed to this is for the name. Treo is well known, which is also why theyre so expensive. I can safely say the 750 will be between 499-549 with NO REBATE! And the 8525 (which is significantly more adnvnced) will be between 424-479 WITH a rebate. Obviously it is significantly less as HTC is trying to make a name for themselves in the United States. I would go for the 8525, cheaper, faster, nicer, bigger higher resolution screen, more memory, better camera, bigg keyboard, ...

Treo is Treo. One handed operation. Better form factor. More ergonomic. Who needs Wifi if you have 3G speeds already. Who needs a 2 mega pixel camera on a PDA if everybody that I know owns a 6 meg or better digital camera. I guess it will all come down to personal preference. For me, I just hate the sliding keyboard on my 8125. HTC showed a preview of an upgraded 8525 from this years CTIA and this phone has a number keypad in the front plus the sliding keyboard. I might consider that for next year.

I just can't use another treo device. Way too many problems and glitches! I think the sliding form factor is great. The larger keyboard is more for power users like me. I do a lot of email and text. Treo just didn't fit any of my needs. pretty phones, just don't work very well. 🙂 I love the sliding keyboard on my 8125 and I'll love it even more on the 8525 because the softkeys were moved up a little. I gotten very used to only handed operation with my 8125. Oh yeah, I don't own a digital camera. carrying 2 and 3 devices is pointless. 8525 gives me a great camera, WiFi, HSDPA, everything I need in 1 device.

Point taken. Sounds like you're good with your 8125. Somebody mentioned in this thread that you can use the 8125 screen as a keyboard for one handed operation. Is that true? Do you know how to do that? Thanks for the input.

i sure do! 😁 the onscreen keyboard can be changed to be a standard keypad with or without t9 activated. it works very well for me for quick use while driving.

from any screen with the onscreen keyboard up, tap the triangle out beside it and select "Phone Pad". you should see a standard phone keypad that can be changed to t9, numbers, or standard abc tap.

I guess it is minor considering these phones (at least my 8125) has great RF signal compared to most phones. I also noticed the Bluetooth range is really good, extending more than what the specs indicate. I'm hoping this positive things will be on the Treo 750 also since HTC made the 750 for Palm. I'll just have to wait and see.

both phones are made by HTC so the difference in cameras is very little. htc doesnt make a great camera.

I can see a few reasons why the Treo might appeal to some people over the 8525:
- The name brand recognition (as previously mentioned) is one thing - Treo users would feel some amount of trust in a new, improved product.
- The form factor is more traditional - some people would prefer something that's Blackberry shaped & has a smaller, more "normal" & regular phone like shape, and I can imagine a few people getting worried about the fact that the sliding mechanism could fail on the 8525.
- Some people might prefer Blue or whatever color they release it in over the Graphite/Silver color scheme of the 8525
Other than that, the 8525 is, IMHO, a clearly superior device. I've read a few reviews of the 750 that lament the lack of wifi...

Totally agree. Coming from a former Treo 650 user to currently HTC 8125, there's a big difference in quality. The RF is far better on the 8125 than Treo. So I can't see a reason why 750 will be any better than the 8525. For me personally, I miss showing off the Blackberry look of my Treo compared to a candy bar look on the HTC. Other than that, I will be trading my 8125 to the 8525 as soon as I can get my hands on it.

750 will have WM so all ur complaints involving the palm os is irrelevant. Palm knows that thier OS is done, thats why they phase out Palm OS, after the 680.

A more important question I think: why would anyone want a PDA-type phone on Cingular if EDGE is so much slower than EVDO on Sprint and Verizon? I'm a Cingy customer that's looking for a PDA phone but everything I read says EDGE is too damn slow

I know myself that if I plan on doing any real web activity I would be using my trusty macbook.. but in a pinch EDGE is fine for basic web stuff..email, slashdot, movie times etc.. I would rather not watch the latest youtube sensation on my phone 🙂

UTMS and HSPDA is on its way and in some areas already. Sprint/Verizon might already have it but cingy is almost there. Edge is ok and 3g speeds are great.

If you're in a major metro area, the 8525 will use Cingy's UMTS network, which is as fast or faster than EVDO. Sprint's adds comparing their new technology (EVDO) to Cingular's old technology (EDGE) are very deceptive.

The 8525 form factor, that is shares with the 8125/6700, is not great if you want a device that is going to be used as a phone. Reason why:
Dialing off the screen sucks.
Having to open the keyboard every time you to type anything, making it a 2 handed device, sucks.
Having to use the stylus for common tasks, again 2 handed, sucks.

you got me here. I'm a cheap ass who wants a pda/phone w/ wifi so I don't have to pay the 40-50 bucks a month for downloading software I need for school. Its the main reason I didn't just get the 3125 honestly.

if you change the on screen keyboard on the 8125 & 8525 to phone pad, you can use them as a one handed device. with t9 activated, it works just like any other phone. i'm sticking with the 8525. stick with the 8525.

typing via the screen defeats the whole purpose of having the slide out qwerty keyboard. and pushing the buttons via screen is not as fast as the keyboard on the 8525 or 750

it is if you are using the 750 as a one handed device. i love the big sliding keyboard on my 8125. i fonud using my 8125 one handed with the phone pad activated works perfect for when when i am driving for text, emails, and such. any other time, the slide is fine because i have two free hands to type. just my two cents, though. 🙂

i understand and trust me, when i have two hands to type it is faster than any other phone but more times than not i only have one hand to type while doing something else and the form factor of the treo suits me better....just depends on who you are and how you use your phone.

Thanks for your insights on one hand operation with 8525. As a long time Treo user, one handed operation is my biggest concern in switching to the 8525(or xv6800 on Verizon when it comes out). How well does your approach work for looking up contacts? This is when I most need the one hand operation and it is extremely easy on the Treo- You just type in first initial and last initial and you are there.
I'd love to get rid of my Treo 700w. It's extremely slow, buggy and the bluetooth implementation is poor.

I need a smart-phone with the fastest internet possible, I will also use it for a bit of email, a little calender useage, plus some lite note taking(and i desire it be a very powerful phone which I hope will provide multi tasking and speed.) Money is no object. I am in a Cingular 3G area. Is this the phone for me or should I wait for the Treo 750. Also regarding the difference between the Treo 750 and this smartphone, what about the data speed difference between Verizon and Cingular's 3G platforms, also Consumer Reports rates Cingular at the bottom of their carrier comparisons in almost every state they judged.....

These two phones are pretty close in comparison. Based on what you described on how you'll use it, either one should be good because they both have WM. Both phones are made by HTC so the audio quality is the same. The processor is not any faster, 8525 has 400 Mhz vs. 300+ for 750. The internet speed should be pretty close between Verizon and Cingular 3G. I like Cingular because of my personal experience with quality, unfortunately, some people don't share the same experience. Having a GSM/UMTS phone is so convenient when I roam outside the country. I just pop in a local SIM for that country's GSM carrier and my calls are all local. Of course I have to get the phone unlocked which is pretty simple through ebay. The only reason why I would rea...

Glad to help. The Treo 750 is still being tested and has not gotten an approval yet. They're trying to get it released on time for the holidays but I'm hoping they'll get rid of all the known bugs before release. We don't want another repeat of the Treo 650 mess. BTW, the Treo 680 will be released before Christmas but it's just a nice upgrade from the 650. I'd definitely wait for the 750. I'll try and post once they receive the approval. Just like you, I would like to get my hands on this baby 🙂

speed dial and voice dial is one thing...but calling numbers not in the phone can be a nuisance(sp?) with an on scree keyboard. i simply prefer actual buttons that the treo has.

consumer reports is very biased when it comes to the wireless industry for some reason. if cingular was really that bad, do you think they would be adding more net adds than sprint which consumer reports rates higher in some markets? don't always believe what you read, try things for yourself, then make your decision. 🙂

i have had sprint, then tmo and now cingular for 3 years. i love cingular, i havent read the report but i have no idea how sprint is better than cingular. They were the worst carrier i have ever had.
