S60 vs S40

Nov 11, 2005, 10:40 AM
A while ago I made some rant about a new 3G nokia that was slated to have S40. I said, something along the lines of "Well I have S60 right now, I'm not going to take a step backward". However, by the next day, it struck me that I have no idea what I'm actually talking about...what's the difference between S40 and S60? My boss said that it's only the interface, and that under the hood symbians are all very similar. Hmm. Educate me please.

Series 40 is not based on Symbian OS. It is based on a closed operating system that is proprietary to Nokia (which they call ISA or "Intelligent Software Architecture"). Nokia licenses Series 40 to a couple of specialty manufacturers (Mobiado, etc.), but no volume manufacturer besides Nokia uses Series 40.
