LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson have all agreed that Micro USB will become the standard port on mobile phones for charging. This means all new phones from these manufacturers will use Micro USB ports and chargers, though the manufacturers didn't announce when the new standard will go into effect.

Voltage regulation?

Some phones require a specific voltage to come off the charger in order to use it (ie. there's a Blackberry model that won't use a RAZR charger, even though it fits... you have to buy the special BB charger). Do you think they'll set all the phones to accept the same voltage, or will we still need to buy a specific charger for certain phones?
i think with this move they are going to agree on a voltage regluation from here on out

You can use the Razr charger for a BB. I do it all the time with my Pearl. The Razr charger puts out a lower voltage than the BB charger so it just charges slightly slower. It's the other way around you want to avoid, using the higher voltage BB c...

they still want to sell accessories with every phone, so i doubt voltages will be regulated, each manufacture will have a different voltage so you cant use anothers charger.....that is if they wanna make money, and the last time i checked thats what a...

poor Radio Shack

What is Radio Shack gonna do now that the "latest in charging technology", the IGO, may be obsolete.
I see Shack's closing their doors nationwide.
This coming from a David Hasselhoff Fan!

I think you forgot that there are other manufacturers out there and still alot of phones that are going to be available that are going to be obsolete but sellable, and people who want to use their existing ph...

Dear god, one could ONLY hope for that, DOWN WITH TANDY!!!
I hardly think that a single product line change will bring down radioshack. When I worked there we had igos and standard CLAs, and it seemed like it was about a 50-50 split between people who wanted to invest in something like igo and others who wan...

Wow. I am happy... but a bit surprised...

Don't they make money selling OEM accessories? This will hurt sales if people don't have to buy all new cables/stuff when they upgrade phones.
but i think this will help boost handset sales.. i know of customers who refuse to upgrade because they have to buy all new accessories everytime they switch handsets.. a lot of custies see it as a racket..

Don't forget the case, holster, and of course software that will allow people to use universal cables to download, this will still be a huge way to make revenue. I still tell customers to buy Universal pouches as they will be the best solution instea...

Is that the same charging port that the V9m has?

Is this Micro USB the same kind of port that is currently being used on the RAZR II V9m? I did notice that the port is similar to Mini USB but smaller on the V9m.
After doing some searching it does appear that it is the same port that is currently on the RAZR II V9m. If that is the case I saw a Sprint branded car charger that was labeled as being compatible with the V9m and the Sanyo S1. If that is the case it ...

Yes it is. Most Motorola phones already use this type of charging port. Awesome news for consumers...bad news for accessory sales.
Nope, it uses a micro USB instead of the mini USB connection
