Codec

Acronym for coder-decoder.

An electronic device, circuit, or software that converts analog signals, such as video and/or voice signals, into digital form, and vice-versa. Usually also includes digital compression technology for added efficiency.

Different codecs may provide different efficiency, quality, and features.
