Hello,

I hope you will be able to help me.
This Summer I will be in Austria for a month and a half, but I will not be able to leave my work behind in the US.
I was wondering whether it is possible to continue to have high speed internet access on my laptop through a cellular phone.
Do you know of any carriers and phones that would allow me to do that ?

Thank you in advance,

Grazia

Yes Cingular would allow to have EDGE high speed data through your cell phone. But What i suggest is for u to buy a world phone and buy a prepaid sim card form a Carrier in Austria. That will amke it so u can avoid the high costs of interantional calls.

Are you going to be using your cellular handset for voice calling while there?

Try these out and see if they help:

You can buy a cheap GPRS card for your laptop. That way you can simply pay locally for a wireless connection w/o using your phone.

Yes, I use a Sprint PCS LG 5350 phone. My speed is 150k-210k.

Their are other models with different wireless carriers that can be used. I also used a GSM phone with Cingular, Motorola v400 my connection was slower but I was using GPRS, they have EDGE phones now with faster data speeds.

Remember they charge for data usage and you may have to sign up for a package or feature to allow this.

And your CDMA handset is relevant in Europe how?

For a wireless consultant I sure do see a decent amount of answers that aren't relevant or accurate.

Again the question is can they have high speed internet with a phone. The answer is yes.

To use overseas GSM is what 70% of the world uses, so a GSM phone is recomended to roam and use your phone as a modem. The speed can vary the faster speeds are GPRS and Edge.

When traveling overseas GPRS or GSM is the most common. Cingular or T-Mobile can offer this but you must check in advance about the cost and coverage overseas.

I took my blackberry to Trinidad a few weeks ago and it did not work. Cingular said to me they do not guarantee international roaming with voice or data.

Have a look at 3G in Austria, it would be faster than EDGE. Just make sure that you will be able to coonect the handset to your laptop for use as a modem.

Nearly any modern GSM/GPRS world phone can give you wireless data for your laptop, one way or another.

The question is, how do you define "high speed"? It probably won't be faster then dial-up, and could be much slower.

Also, international GPRS roaming is quite expensive - you will want to look what's offered by the local service providers.
