GSM/TDMA

by having GSM overlay, does that hold back the tower coverage potential? or does it even matter? would coverage increase if cing just tore down anything TDMA?

Coverage shouldn't be affected directly, but they do have to divide spectrum between TDMA and GSM. That means if spectrum is tight in a given area, or it's mismanaged, one set of users (TDMA or GSM) might get a lot of network-busies.
