Phones from overseas
Hey is it possible to buy a tri or quad band phone and find a way for it to work on Cingular ot T mobiles GPRS systems. I work for a cingular agent. but have seen some people accessing the web on phones that we don't offer here in the states. Any ideas?

There are some quad band phones that support European and US GSM networks so it was likely someone over here using the T-Mobile network unless Cingular has an agreement with a euro carrier. Check out the Phones section in here and pull up the manufacturer pages and sort them out and you can see if any are sold in the US or will become available. You could always have Rich Brome answer it, he always has an answer for someone like you and he runs the site!

in theory, all tri-band phones from europe will work with t-mobile's network here in the states. they should also work on cingular, but necessarily on all of cingular's network since there are areas with no 1900 mHz coverage.
if you have a european phone, and are using a SIM from a european carrier, your phone will join whichever network the carrier back in europe prefers. if you picked up a phone in europe, but want to use it with a SIM from an american carrier, you first need to be sure it is sim-unlocked. then the same rules from above apply. t-mo = yes, cingular = maybe. afaik, there are no quad-band phones sold in europe that are not sold in the US, unless by quad band they mean wcdma 2100 gsm/gprs 900/1800/1900

Yes. Quad-band GSM phones can be used on any US GSM network. Tri-band GSM phones (900/1800/1900) can be used on T-Mobile.
If the phone is unlocked, all you need to do is pop in the SIM chip.
For MMS and WAP, you'd also need to enter some settings into the phone, but those are usually easy to find on the Internet.
