FCC Auction 58

OK, I'm not exactly sure what this auction is for. Here's what I think I understand..

Vista PCS - aka Verizon
Edge Mobile - Cingular
Cook Inlet - T Mobile
(the only three that I care about)

What I don't understand is what are they bidding on? License's right? Is that the most lines that they can have in a area? And how often does the FCC do this, and how do they determine what areas get more licenses?

Any clarification on this subject would be appreciated, thx

If I'm not mistaken the carriers are bidding on licenses to whatever lots of spectrum are up for grabs.

They're bidding on spectrum licenses. A carrier needs to be licensed to offer service in a given area. The license will specify which spectrum they can offer service on.

I think a lot of the carriers bidding are working on expanding their data network rather than setting up new service areas, but I'm not sure on that one.

I think these are returned from bankrupt and out of business carriers, not new. Smaller carriers owned these already.
