Can some one explain AT&T's use of 3G to me.
Basically do they use it for voice and data or just data?
I have a 3G capable phone and a regular quad band GSM phone. When using the 3G phone the signal strength is all ways about half and says 3G. When using the regular GSM phone the signal obviously doesn't say 3G but has full strength.
I don't care about data coverage I want good voice coverage so if 3G can't provide that yet I'm assuming it's best to sick with a regular GSM phone for now?

Everything you want to know about 3G

They use it for both, the 3G technology allows you to do voice and data at the same time. I have a Motorola Q9h and even though its a 3G phone I take it off that band and use edge. By doing that it extends my battery life and for what I do I don't really need the 3G. If I do I just switch it back.

Yeah me too, I have an unlocked Nokia N95-3 and most of the time I keep my phone on GSM, and only usually put it on Dual Mode (3G) when at home and I have it plugged in. But I already have 1 spare battery and a 2nd spare on the way coming from Hong Kong that I ordered on ebay. So maybe next week I'll start keeping 3G on more often. But keeping it on EDGE really does make a difference with battery it really does.

It's for voice and data, but if it ever can't get a good 3G signal, it will automatically fall back to GSM, so there should be no disadvantage when it comes to coverage.
