I currently have 2 i860's, when Nextel finally upgrades its service from 800Mhz to 1.9Ghz will I have to buy new phones or will there be some way to upgrade them, at the same time will they be upgrading to a better technology (cdma), If they go to CDMA then I already know I will have to get new phones, and if that is the case are they going to offer their new phones at a major discounted rate for current subscribers to their service that will be forced to upgrade. Does anybody have a timeline as to when any of these things might happen?

Yes, in general you will need a new phone to take advantage of new frequency bands. That type of thing is not upgradeable.

However, Nextel has not yet announced what its plans are for new technology and spectrum, so it's premature to say when you will need to upgrade you phone.

And even at a very accelerated time frame...I wouldn't expect them to start implementing changes till 2006 or 2007. I should think that sounds feasible. You'll be upgrading your current phones by then.

nextel isnt using their 1.9ghz spectrum for voice. they have said over and over and over again that they wont use that spectrum for the voice part, its only for data such as broadband.

as to getting new phones.... if they do use the 1.9ghz for voice, which they have said over and over and over again that they wouldnt, motorola is making it so that their iden network will work well with the cdma carriers. i dont think it will be a big deal in upgrading. qualcomm and motorola will work on that to make it happen.

" and if that is the case are they going to offer their new phones at a major discounted rate for current subscribers to their service that will be forced to upgrade."

discounts and nextel in the same sentence? hahah you ha...
