Need simple phone and simple plan for Sr Citizen mom

My mom joined Cingular and got a cheap LG phone a couple years back just to have an emergency phone.
She has never set up her voicemail (doesn't know how and wouldn't know how to retrieve it if I did it for her)
Her plan expired this past December and has been looking for a simpler phone with fewer minutes. She prefers to use her home phone for Long distance and I got her on a economical plan so usage of her cell phone for long distance would no longer be required to save money.

Is there a plan (with a reputable carrier) that has an easy to operate (or at least easy to explain to her) with a low end phone usage plan and of course free usage of 911 and maybe 2 or 3 people?

Any phone should have the capability to dial 911 without any plan. Some companies also offer "loyalty" plans for someone to use minimally. I would enquire about that with your current provider (cingular) or shop for a company/provider that has one (verizon,t-mobile,sprint,etc)

I hope this helps.

Like it or not, we don't want low end users...they make no profit for the companies...

VZW has a $34.99 plan, nationwide, 300 min plus nights & weekends...

Phone would be free or up to $20-30.

if anyone was just going to tell here like it was. get the cheapest plan they will give you, and get the free phone.

no company thinks your Sr Citizen mom is special...that is except for jitterbug.com

I think that Cingular has options for you. I am a Cingular employee. First, make sure that she goes into a store to try out the phones. It is important that she takes time to get to know her device before she buys it. (I make sure that my senior clients know how to use the phone before they leave my store) Next, we have some low minute price plans for her. We now have a line of plans that fit her needs. We refer to them as GO PHONES. You can 2 types: pay as you go or pick your own plans. My 93 yr old Grandfather has the pay as you go plan. He just comes by the Cingular store or calls a 1-800 number before it expires and refills it. I hope that this helps.

I looked into Go-phones and liked the idea of The Firefly, however it too had horrible reviews and that would be the level of phone I would be looking for my mom.

thanks for your input

motodude is right... Cingulatr should have an emergency or bare-bones 'basic' plan that is just a few minutes a month (if any) and you pay just for the minutes you use almost as if it were a prepay phone, but with no minimum refills.

Also check into Virgin Mobile's monthly plans. they have a plan that is $6.99/mo but you pay 10 cents/minute of talk time and run of of sprint's network

The absolute lowest plan(in my market at least) is $29.99 a month. 200 anytime minutes and 1000 night and weekend minutes. You do not get rollover, mobile to mobile, free roaming, or free long distance. For that play you have to call in and request it. That is the lowest post paid.

Prepay is another option but a different story in itself.

Hmmm, the only bad thing I have heard about jitterbug is their lack of stores... but then until recently (with at&t) local phone companies didn't have stores either...
I have heard their customer service is quite good, actually.

For our elderly parents, we have found Jitterbug cust svc to be quite good. However, the sound quality of the phone is very poor, the voice-recognition dialing is so bad we just don't even attempt to use it, and many many times the phone fails to ring, even though regular Verizon phones have strong signal at their address. I have tested this failure to ring the Jitterbug phone at their address a number of times, calling the Jitterbug from various landlines and other cellphones, and witnessing it NOT ring for the incoming calls. Calling to a Verizon phone within seconds and it rings Verizon every time. So we suspect that Jitterbug calls are just Verizon's lowest priority and get booted if there are any genuine Verizon calls going on that towe...
