Settle this once and for all

For weeks I have logged onto this site and read forums and articles and researched cell phone companies as well as their coverage maps. The two I have come down to are Verizon and Cingular. One has the larger network and one has the larger customer base. But when it comes down all down to it. Who do you have the better overall celluar phone experience w/. Meaning reception, dropped calls, clarity, coverage, pricing, featurs (such as nites @ 7pm), customer service, website. Which one is best on phone calls on your stress and on your pocketbook. 😳

I have had both services in the last few years. I'm using Cingular now and my family still has Verizon. Our services varies depending on where we are. They live in the mountains and tend to get better reception up there than I do, but in the city I get better than they do. There's never going to be a service that is better than all the others in all areas. Honestly, the best thing to do is ask around in your area which is better. Maybe Verizon has more towers in your city than they do in mine. My experience really won't help you there. If that still doesn't help, pull up the website for both companies and compare plans and features side by side to see which one fits you best. There's no universal answer on this one. Good luck! 😁

Have you looked at US Cellular? They offer many features that other companies don't.

TRUE nationwide features that aren't "network" specific. Such as FREE incoming calls anytime anywhere no matter whose network you are using and the same for FREE nights and weekends starting at 7.

The only network specific feature they have is mobile to mobile.

The plans are extrememly comparable to the "bigger" carriers if not better.

US Cellular also utilizes Verizon's AND Sprint's network. I have traveled all over the country and never had problems with my service OR my bills.

Give them a shot!

Are there certain features you are looking for?

Seriously, depends where you live, what you use your phone for, data? wants vcast? don't care? rollover? Cingular has the nights option for an extra fee, verizon doesn't have it at all. Cingular has a few extra M2M base, but not much diff i guess. GSM is more convenient if you have more than one phone. verizon's esn swap is an unnecessary hassle, in my opinion. Overall, Cingular has got it made in my book, EXCEPT when it comes to data and instant downloads (music, video) as they are a little late in coming to market. I'm sure they'll build up some steam and catch up soon...the thing is, Verizon has got the lead in that. I mean, YouTube on your phone? You know Verizon is on the cutting edge when it comes to new ideas and putting them out q...

YouTube still isnt live TV like on Sprint, its video clips...something Sprint and VZW have had in common for a while..

If you want Live TV, Sprint has got it..plus EVDO Rev. A rolling out..brinigng up speeds. Cingular uses MobiTV for their Live TV Service, which works both on HSDPA and EDGE. So I'd think Cingular thought of the Live TV thing first, since they rolled it out quite some time back on their 2.5 G phones. Sprint just rolled out Live TV within the past 6 months.

(Was demoed the MobiTV on the Cingular Razr last January. It's decent.)

Or do you like music. VZW lets you buy music from them. Sprint has Sirius Satelite radio on their handsets, plus Sprint Music store. Cingular lets you buy/download/bluetooth sync the mus...

I had Sprint, Alltel, Cingular and now Verizon. Sprint 😢 had bad customer service in my opion. Cingular 🙄 just drop calls. Alltel 🤣 drop even more calls. Verizon 😁 I havent drop one in a bit. I travel around the US almost the whole year and had to switch 3 providers until I found the right one.

Also depends on when you did this...there have been some huge changes and leapfrogs in the past year or so.

Just take a look at the home coverage maps and Yahoo! Tech.

Odd..it appears Cinulgar leapfrogged VZW in coverage, and they charge the same, sprint does to and has been declared the largest carrier by Yahoo Tech this year. (Sep 14, 2006 1:36PM EDT)

Yet the offerings are different, Sprint offers Fair and Flexable, with no overage charges. Cingular offers Rollover minutes.

(A side note, VZW seems to rely on roaming partners for the coverage that used to be AMPS 850. According to some articles I've seen Sprint became VZW's largest roaming partner.)

So check to see if your phone says Verizon Wireless or "Extended Network" (I heard the majority of Extended Network Coverage is coming from Sprint PCS now)

Sprint combined with Nextel though. And that doesn't mean they get good coverage.... 😕 And with Verizon, they get better coverage in those middle of nowhere places than anybody I've had. 🤣 Cingular handpicks people and drops customers just so they can say they have better stats. Everyone thinks Verizon is too expensive, but compare plans, and the leading competitors are almost allt he same prices, and Verizon even offers better plans than Sprint once you get to like 1350 minutes. Sprint has the worst customer service I've ever experienced. For coverage though, Verizon for sure.

If you are in any way looking for data reliability and/or mobile internet Cingular should be imediately cut. I would look toward Sprint or Verizon. They are the top two in every category.

I would agree but it appears that VZW's home coverage has degraded some, so places where you used to get home coverage and some form of data don't work anymore.

Overall Sprint has the largest home coverage area covering 295 million people, their data network covering 198 million. Sprint now has EVDO Rev. A, which is faster than EVDO Rev. 0 along with live TV on their phones.

Cingular has the second largest networ covering 270 Million people in its home network. They have the largest data coverage, covering 250 Million with EDGE and 50 Million with HSDPA, which was only recently launched.

Verizon wireless covers only 255 Million with their home network and their data only covers 150 Million people. Verizon's EVDO coverage is great...
