Tmobile and AMP'd to buy out competitors contracts as a recruiting tool
This is entirely a rumor, but with the introduction of AMP'd, which I know very little about, there has been some discussion by people in the industry that they AMP'd is looking for a major carrier to team up with to buy out contracts. This strategy from what I understand is common in Europe. So my question is this, has anyone heard of this possibility, if so, what? Secondly, outside of the possible loss of the so-called cell phone subsidy, what does the consumer gain? Finally, what are your thoughts on this eliminating the ETFs?
For the record I have already heard the argument that ETFs are supposedly good for the customer cause it gives the subsidy, assuming we as customers in long term contracts are not actually receiving a subsi...

To be honest I have heard of companies that will pay half of your termination fee. In regards to the whole thing yet I'm not aware of that yet but because your competing with indirect and telesales and everybody else including other competitors I KNOW WE HAVE AND DO help with the (ETF's). In the end all that matters is how many is on your network at least thats how we look at it.

It all depends on how they provision it really. If they give you a free phone that has a retail price of $150 and Cingular's phone cancellation fee is $150 then they just bought out your contract. Sprint was buying out contracts this last summer to get people to switch.

Well that may be the case there but I've seen them throw you the kitchen sink free phone (not the vi660 or the 560) for free as well as half the termination fee that market here is so saturated with indirect dealers that its to now the consumers advantage. ex. today customer receive half termination fee payed for switching over 4 phones from cingular and gave them all free phones A840 camera phones so instead of $50 a phone they had 4 free phones and instead of paying cingular $150 per termination there only paying $75 cause the rest is picked up by Sprint
