Most of the User Manuals I have read have stated that if your phone is lost or stolen report it to the police.

i'm pretty sure the only situation you would need to file a police report is if you file an insurance claim. the insurance companies usually require a report for stolen phones.

Exactly. If you're making an insurance claim is the only situation where you need to report it to the police.

thank you Rich.....

We require a police report with both lost or stolen phones in order to file an insurance claim. This is standard for any property insurance. If you could theoretically lose your car and you wanted to file a claim with your car insurance company, you would need to file a police report as well.

Also, the insurance is not a handset replacement program, but a handset exchange program. You are required to return your equipment to us if possible. Because the equipment is lost or stolen, you cannot return it,so this creates a legal record that we can use to report fraud if in fact it turns out that we are being defrauded.

On the whole, at least 30-40% of the claims that I file have some fraudulent aspect to them. We have so many security measures in place now that we catch almost all of them. You'd be amazed at how many people assume that we are not a real insurance company with federal guidelines. Believe me. We are. We do. I even had a guy who asked me to straight up change the info to get him a free razr. When I told him that was fra...

If your phone is "lost", not "stolen", why would you have to report it to the police? My daughter lost her phone (I believe about a year ago, but could have been two (RI-Verizon), and I just filed the insurance claim and she got a new phone. But, as was mentioned, this could be a new law I don't know about. You can call 611 at Verizon and I'm sure they will be able to let you know the facts.
