buying service/phones from amazon

amazon has some really great deals on phones, some even have rebates that pay you to use the phone. sounds a little fishy to me, but then again i dont know how they can do it. can anyone direct me towards it or away from it?

Well there are some good points and bad points about Amazon.yhe good is that are willing to take a loss on the phone to pass discounts to the customer.The downsides are pretty harsh thoguh.They are a authorized dealer, so they different carriers services like Nextel, Verizon, Cingular among others.

Now they offer those great deals for activation of a new service, as what they lose on the phone, they make from the commision of a new service from that carrier.The...

Nice biased info coming from a Cingular employee.

Look, the Amazon deals are great. You won't lose your rebate if your phone is lost/stolen (unless some bonehead deacts your account instead of a simple suspension while you get a replacement). You do have to comply with their terms and conditions, but if you do the deal is great.

The vast majority of Cingular stores (and I own one as an Authorized Agent) don't want to encourage you to buy online. There are real drawbacks, like the ability to exchange in a local store or go to a store with a knowledgeable sales professional. If you are the type of person who buys online and never needs help then by all means, take advantage of their prices.
