Can anyone confirm if all carriers are going to be releasing cell phone numbers to telemarketing companies? I have received an e-mail about it and I'm not sure if this is bogus?

Welllll.....some cell phone companies are creating a directory of cell phone numbers, and if your number was in there, it would be available to be seen by telemarketers.

Of course, it's still illegal for a telemarketer to contact you on your cell phone, although i believe there are exceptions for charity and politcal based calls.

keep in mind most of the carriers are mandating the directory to be opt in only.. I.e. you have to call to ask for it to be placed in the directory.

you have to request to be added to thier directory

Also NO telemarketers are allowed to call you on your cell phone unlike your home phone charities are excempt but not with cell phones because you are the one paying for the call!!

Also you can registar your landline and mobile numbers on the national DO NOT CALL list at www.donotcall.gov!!

Yes there is going to be a directory and from what i heard you have to sign up on a do not call list. Verizon that you do not have to sign up cause they are not publishing their numbers.

According to the Dallas Morning News:

"Good news – you didn't miss the Dec. 15 deadline to get your cellphone number taken off a nationwide list being created for telemarketers.
There was no Dec. 15 deadline. What's more, there's no list, despite what one may have learned from friends or scary e-mails."

So, this is bogus. There is no list. This is simply a scare tactic used by opponents of the 411 service. You must expressly request that your number be added to the 411 directory. Even then, I think it's still illegal for telemarketers to call your cell.

For about the last 6 months the FCC has been hounded about wireless #'s to be public knowledge due to the enormous # of landline cancellations. The specific carrier has the option whether to make it public or not. It will be written on the information page of your bill, if it will happen. But just because this law has passed that isn't the only way it can be slipped into the hands of telemarketers. If you use your cell phone as your only means of communication and put this # down, when you write a check, fill out an application or credit check or a survey or a raffle to win. Those all can be transferred or sold to telemarketing firms.

However there is an answer. Call 1-888-382-1222 this is the Federal National Do Not Call List. You can c...

you can go to the website for the do not call lists and put your cell phone number through and it will ban those types of calls as well as your house line.
