called into alltel to make some changes to my plan and the rep on the phone said we can expect to see Verizon stores by the end of January. Also said as of right now we will be grandfathered into Verizon with our plans so it will probably be a good idea to get one of the higher end plans by the end of December or first part of January.

More like they were talking out their wazoo. The deal has not even ben finalized yet - and until it is, anyone giving even a wild (bleep) guess like this is simply blowing smoke up your pants.
There is one thing true... customers who are not divested will be able to remain on whatever plan they have for the remaining duration of their contract when the deal closes. Getting locked into a new contract may sound like a good idea - however, those Alltel folks interested in some of the Verizon hardware offerings might not want to be locked in.
